Chinese Federation of Commerce of Canada
Tsunami Relief

Date : Jan 8, 2005

Dec. 26, 2004, a 9.0-magnitude earthquake centred off the Indonesian island of Sumatra triggers tsunamis that pound the shorelines of nine countries, levelling whole villages and killing around 150,000 people. This Asian earthquake and Tsunami is the most devastating disaster in the past 40 years.

The federal government has announced that it will match donations, dollar by dollar, made by individual Canadians to Canadian non-governmental organizations (NGOs) already involved in responding to the disaster. As one of the major objectives of Chinese Federation of Commerce of Canada is to assist Chinese Community to participate in events of the Canadian Community, CFCC have designed an Information Poster to assist the general public how they can help the tsunami victims. This Poster will provide a list of the NGOs that have been approved (Up to the date as announced) by the Government of Canada. The posters and table tent cards will be distributed to the retail stores and restaurants in the Lower Mainland by volunteers. We hope that can arouse the kind hearts of the fortunate British Columbians.

The Board of Directors of Chinese Federation of Commerce of Canada has initiated a fund-raising campaign within our membership and this campaign will be extended to our Chinese New Year Festival period. Free booths will be granted to different organizations for fund-raising. Organizations that have already confirmed are Red Cross and World Vision. We would have programs in the festival to raise fund specifically for the Tsunami relief. With over hundred thousand of attendance, we are confident that we can raise considerable amount of donations. Within our membership, we have request our business members to donate part of their net profit to the relief fund. Corporate members that have already participated are Roger Celtek, Granville Seafood Restaurant, Inkjetmart, CET Productions, Creative Advertising, etc.

Our head table VIPs showing their support of this campaign are:

Hon. Raymond Chan, Federal Minister of State, Multi-Culturalism
Hon. Patrick Wong, Provincial Minister of State for Immigration and Multicultural Services
Dr. William Cheuk, President of Chinese Federation of Commerce of Canada
Ms. Susan Mader, Regional Communication Manager, CBC
